#33: Why?

If you’ve got toddlers, you’ll be on the receiving end of this question a few dozen times a day.

They’ll start with an enquiring question …

And then follow that up with their favorite one-word question …

‘Why?’

Which they will ask over and over again …

Until they are satisfied that they’ve got to ‘the bottom line’.

Some studies show that a 4-year-old can ask up to 300 questions a day. And by the time they’ve reached 5, these little learning machines can have racked up 40,000 questions.

If getting to the bottom line or the heart of issues is important to you, then why don’t you add a couple of ‘why’ questions to the answer you get when using any of the other Smart CEO Questions?

Why?

Because the surface-level answer you get from one of your team to your initial question might not be the real answer you are looking for.

Why?

Because people think through filters. And those filters may affect their understanding or interpretation of your question and …

By conditioning yourself to ask this little one-word question in response to every answer you get, you may just find that you experience the same level of insight and understanding in your business that a toddler experiences as they explore their world for the first time.
