#49: What can I do to engage more of my people?

According to research, roughly 1 out of every 2 employees are disengaged.

Meaning, they turn up for work because they need the money.

They’ll do what’s required of them but not with passion or enthusiasm. And you can forget them showing any initiative!

If you have unengaged employees then the good news is that it’s unlikely to be because of you – according to other research just 14.9% of employees sight ‘disliking the boss’ as a reason for their unhappiness at work!

It’s more likely that they don’t share your enthusiasm for the goals of the business – just 1 in 5 employees feel a connection to a company’s goals or vision.

And only 1 in 5 see a clear connection between what they actually do all day and the accomplishment of the company’s goals or vision.

And that is ALL down to you.

The best companies in the world have just 1 disengaged employee for every 24 engaged employees.

So, just 4 out of every 100 employees, compared to an average of 50 in every 100 employees

Obviously, you’d expect more engaged employees to impact on results. And they do. On average generating …

17% more profitability!

20% more sales!

21% increased profitability!

You are no doubt somewhere in between.

But maybe as CEO it should be a personal KPI to improve that number.

You could start by asking people what they think your organization’s goal or vision should be.

That alone should improve your new KPI.

And then you could ask people what work they would do to help achieve that goal or vision.

I bet that would improve your new KPI.

If you want engagement, engage.
