#55: Do we have ‘esprit de corps’?

The dictionary describes ‘esprit de corps’ as the common spirit existing in the members of a group and inspiring enthusiasm, devotion, and strong regard for the honor of the group.

Military units worldwide have ‘esprit de corps’.

It’s usually summed up in a few words with a ‘motto’ – which the dictionary defines as ‘a short sentence or phrase chosen as encapsulating the beliefs or ideals of an individual, family, or institution’.

Many elite-level military units have become famous for their mottos.

For example, almost everyone knows the motto ‘Who Dares Wins’.

And most could tell you that it belongs to the SAS (UK Special Air Services).

Their motto sums up their reputation.

And it gives them a reputation to live up to.

That 3-word statement enables them to articulate their ‘esprit de corps’.

It’s this ‘esprit de corps’ that makes them such a formidable force.

And feared by their enemies.

So, is your company a formidable force?

Does everyone know what reputation you are striving to live up to?

Does an ‘esprit de corps’ exist around that?

Do you have a company motto that sums it up?

And … does the mere mention of your name put fear in the heart of your competitors?

Or do you need to start work on creating that ‘esprit de corps’?
