Arguably, your #1 job as CEO is to ensure that you’ve created a big enough vision.
Your vision can be just as important to your people as the pay checks you write them.
Unless of course, you are happy employing people that are only interested in exchanging their time with you for the money they need to pay their bills.
Having a big vision, a ‘lifetime goal’ that people can believe in and get behind, will inspire them to give you so much more of themselves.
Your vision should give people a sense of purpose.
Your vision should make people feel like they are part of something.
Your vision should make people feel that they are contributing to the achievement of something important.
Your vision should even make people proud to say where they work.
Tesla has a great vision …
To ‘create the most compelling car company of the 21st century by driving the world’s transition to electric vehicles.’
See how they use of the word ‘compelling’ instead of something lame like the ‘best’ or ‘biggest’.
The dictionary defines ‘compelling’ as: ‘evoking interest, attention, or admiration in a powerfully irresistible way.’
I’d put a check in that box!
And look how they are self-appointing themselves as leaders by ‘DRIVING THE WORLDS TRANSITION to electric vehicles.’
Now, does that make you want to refresh your vision?
