In 1630, John Winthrop delivered a sermon aboard the flagship Arbella. He is now famous for its proclamation that “we shall be as a city upon a hill.”
Politicians from John F. Kennedy to Ronald Reagan built a powerful vision of American exceptionalism – the idea “that there was some divine plan that placed this great continent between two oceans to be sought out by those who were possessed of an abiding love of freedom and a special kind of courage.”
The need to have a purpose, that we are here for a reason, resonated with a wide range of people that defined us ever since. “More than anything else the people of America are asking for a clear sense of National Purpose.”
This vision united us on some level, informed decision making and the role of government as well as the responsibility of the people.
For some reason we lost our way, we do not have a national “City Upon a Hill” vision or values for ourselves that unites us.
